Host UK

Sussex students can participate in the UK-wide HOST homestay programme, which offers international students to spend either a day or a weekend with a British family in their local area or in a different part of the UK.

"HOST is your best window to Britain. If you want to learn more about British culture and people in a short period of time, HOST is your best option."Ali Al-Agri from Yemen

"Host UK allowed me to really connect and get to know the English culture. My family showed me all the touristy places, but more importantly, their favorite areas that are not very well known. It is a great way to spend the weekend and make new friends!" - Elizabeth Quan from the USA

Volunteer hosts offer a friendly welcome to international students from any country.

You can visit a host in a different part of Britain for a weekend, practise your English conversational skills, and find out about British customs and way of life.

As well as giving you a 'home from home' experience, hosts are keen to learn more about your culture as well. Christmas visits are also available, although these are very popular and you would need to apply early.

The scheme is well-established and you can feel completely safe as all hosts are checked by the organisation. Feedback is requested after every visit and this is carefully monitored.

The University offers a limited number of subsidised visits, however please note that there is no further funding available for the 2018/19 academic year. If you are still interested in undertaking a HOST visit it is possible for you to do so, covering the full cost yourself. There is also an administration fee of £20 that you would need to pay, as well as the costs of transport to your host accommodation.

To find out more, visit the HOST website, or get in contact with International Student Support. You can also find out more about costs here.
