Examination and Assessment Handbooks
The Examination and Assessment Regulations govern the way in which all taught students – undergraduate and postgraduate - are examined and assessed at the University of Sussex.
The current Examination and Assessment Regulations were approved at Senate on 18 September 2012. These Regulations apply to all taught students in 2012-13, including students continuing their studies from previous years.
The regulations ensure we are adopting best practice in relation to examinations and assessment principles and processes, and that we are treating all students with equity and parity.
For students, the best guidance document to read is the Q&A below we have prepared explaining how assessment and feedback operates at Sussex.
Examination and Assessment Handbook 2012-13
We set out detail and explanatory information in the University Examination and Assessment Handbook 2012-13. This has a number of sections:
Transitional arrangements for continuing students in 2012-13
The University has put in place transitional arrangements for 2012-13 which apply to students who started their studies at Sussex in previous years. These transitional arrangements are based on the principle of “no detriment” to students at classification or to degree award – ie so that in moving to the new regulations, students do not suffer detriment at classification or to degree award compared to how their work would have been treated under the previous regulations.

Explaining assessment and feedback: Q&A
The Regulations are the formal documents governing examinations and assessment. In order to provide a more user friendly guide for students, we have also set out information for students in a “frequently asked questions” format:
- Assessment and Feedback Policy and Procedures for Students (pdf document)
If there are other questions which could usefully be covered by this guidance, please email Carmel Oxley-King (c.oxley@sussex.ac.uk) and we will add them.
Mitigating evidence procedures
As students go through the process of examination and assessment, there may be unforeseen circumstances which affect a student’s performance which need particularly to be taken into account through a process of “mitigating evidence”.
We have a procedure for managing this and guidance on this is set out:
Doctoral Researchers
The Handbook for Doctoral Researchers can be accessed at Research Degree Matters Handbooks.
Further information and guidance
If students have any further questions, their first point of guidance should be their academic adviser. If academic staff themselves need any further guidance, then they should consult their Director of Teaching and Learning in the School. The lead within the Academic Office is Carmel Oxley-King (c.oxley@sussex.ac.uk)
