Jason started his role with the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab (“the Lab”) last month. He joins from the technical team at the Faculty of Media, Arts, and Humanities where he works as Senior Technician for Music since 2022.
We talked to Jason about his background and practice, and what he hopes to bring to the Lab’s community.
Tell us a bit about your background.
I am an audio/visual technician and sound artist whose work bridges technology, performance, and sound-based research. My practice spans studio and live performance environments, performing arts, and sound art installations, with a particular focus on sound as a medium for expression, experimentation, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
As a published songwriter and recording artist, I have released music under various pseudonyms and continue to work as a musician and audio engineer. My professional experience informs my academic interests in the creative and technical processes in sound production and performance.
What type of activities are you involved with?
I run workshops in music composition and engineering, supporting emerging artists and promoting collaborative learning environments. I produce and exhibit work both independently and with artists across a wide range of creative disciplines. My current projects for this year are releasing the second album with my band, recording tracks for my solo project and developing a sound installation piece I made for an exhibition at the Phoenix Gallery, Brighton which was curated with fellow Technicians at the University of Sussex.
What do you hope to bring to the Lab?
I bring a unique blend of technical expertise, creative practice, and collaborative experience to the lab, drawing on my background as an audio/visual technician and sound artist. My skills in sound design, engineering, and multimedia production support the innovative research and interdisciplinary projects within the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab, while my experience curating and producing sound art installations informs the ways technology and artistic expression converge.
What excites you about joining the Lab?
I am looking forward to the opportunity to support people from such a diverse range of disciplines within Digital Humanities. The Lab’s interdisciplinary approach creates a unique space to explore technology and creative practice. I am keen to support and contribute to projects that push boundaries, further dialogue, and create innovative ways of experiencing and understanding digital culture. Being part of a community that values experimentation and collaboration is inspiring, and I’m eager to support and learn from the exchange of ideas across different fields.
Jason started his Specialist Technician role for the lab last month sharing duties with Alex Peverett. Visit Jason’s website for more information about his music and artistic practice.
