We will be screening Parting Glances, dir. Bill Sherwood, 1986 on Wednesday, 6th May in Silverstone 309 from 4-6pm followed by a social at IDS Bar, where we will discuss the film, its themes and debates.
The film, produced and released at the height of the AIDS crisis discusses the relationship between ex-lovers Michael and Nick, as they navigate Nick's AIDS diagnosis and Michael's partner Robert's departure for a two-year stint in Africa. While a drama film, Steve Buscemi's performance as Nick as comedic depicts his subjectivity as a person living with AIDS in the mid-1980s as multilayered. The film is praised for being one of the earlier depictions of realistic experience with the epidemic - alongside some other examples, including An Early Frost (1985), Buddies (1985), and Longtime Companion (1989).
The film screening will be introduced by Chris Frantz, doctoral resarcher in Film Studies, who will be reading edited excerpts from their thesis chapter centred around the "AIDS body".
