Provision of toilets, showers and changing rooms across campus

In last month's update, I discussed the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated draft Code of Practice and the additional steps that we are considering to ensure both legal compliance and a supportive and inclusive environment on our campus for everyone. The government has now determined that this code will come into force on Wednesday 5 August 2026.

Building on an extensive scoping exercise, we are developing plans to provide adequate facilities for men, women and for all/any genders. The law is complex, with different obligations for the University as an employer and as a service provider. Whilst provision in some of our buildings is sufficient, it remains challenging in some of our older buildings. As I mentioned, we will consult on specific proposals, particularly through the staff networks and I will update further in due course.

Inclusive Sussex Framework

Earlier this week I shared the Inclusive Sussex Framework 2025–35, our revised approach to culture, equality and inclusion for the decade ahead. Aligning with Sussex 2035 and the Recovery and Rebuilding strategic plan, and building on the previous Inclusive Sussex strategy, the new framework provides a rationale and basis for our work to continue to support every student and member of staff to be valued, respected, and able to achieve their potential.

Islamophobia and Antisemitism training

In a time of rising hatred and prejudice, understanding the particularities of different forms of racism and religious discrimination is especially important. Since this workstream commenced, we have explored issues through publications, speakers and other events and I am very pleased that we have now introduced e-learning modules on Recognising and Responding to Antisemitism, and Recognising and Responding to Islamophobia, on LearnUpon. I hope that these modules will help colleagues to recognise how both forms of prejudice and discrimination can manifest, and how to deal with situations when they do.

Trans Pride and International Non-Binary People’s Day

International Non-Binary People’s Day is held on 14 July every year, half-way between International Women’s Day and International Men’s Day. The non-binary flag was flown from Sussex House from 10-15 July to mark the day.

Trans Pride Brighton & Hove was held on Saturday 18 July, the first and largest trans pride event outside of America. The University’s Trans and Non-Binary and LGBTQ+ staff networks jointly held a Trans Pride party on 16 July to mark the occasion, a lovely event involving conversation, food and live music.

Last few places available to take part in the University’s walking party at Brighton & Hove Community Pride

There are still a few places available to take part in the University’s walking party at the Brighton & Hove Community Pride Parade on Saturday 1 August, and you can sign up via this link. You will need to be available from 9am to 2pm, and the invitation is open to staff, students and alumni. 

Untapped Potential event: Can EDI Improve Science?

Colleagues are invited to join a thought-provoking event exploring the role of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in scientific research and innovation. Chaired by Dr Neil Singh and Dr Samira Bouyagoub, the event includes a panel discussion featuring Dr Elizabeth Rendon-Morales and also Prof Mahendra Patel of the University of Oxford and Assoc Prof Melissa Creary of the University of Michigan. Taking place in Jubilee Building from 1-3pm on Wednesday 29 July, this free event is open to all but booking is required.

Current and upcoming religious observances

Dhammacakka Day (sometimes called Dharma Day) falls on 29 July this year and marks the date of the Buddha's first sermon. Some Buddhists may honour this date by visiting temples to engage in chanting and meditation. Also on 29 July is Guru Purnima, a Hindu, Jain and Buddhist observance honouring spiritual teachers or gurus. 

The harvest festival of Lammas falls on 1 August, celebrated by Pagans, Wiccans, and Druids. August 13-16 marks the sacred Buddhist period of Obon, which honours the spirits of ancestors. Saturday 15 August is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which Catholics may observe on Sunday 16 August. Best wishes to all who are celebrating religious festivals over this period.

Finally, despite the difficulties that we are facing, I do hope that you are able to take a relaxing break this summer.
