The Sussex Researcher

Message from the Research Staff Office

Hello everyone

I hope the start of the new academic term is going well for you all. We are pleased that the month of October kicks off the new year of workshops and professional development events for researchers. Many of you have already registered for the events we have coming up during autumn but there are still some spaces available; so take a look at the full programme and sign up for your chosen events soon.

We are particularly looking forward to the Autumn Term Research Staff Forum on 28th October, which will see the launch of a new Sussex PostDoc-Network, which is entirely led by researchers for researchers and will be an excellent opportunity to meet and discuss ideas and issues with postdoctoral staff across the university - see the article below for more information.

Please take time to look at the full outcomes and recommendations from the CROS survey that you contributed to earlier in the year. We are going to be busy over the coming months working with schools and colleagues across the university to implement the recommendations to continue to make improvements to the support for Sussex researchers.

Best wishes and I look forward to seeing you at the various autumn events,

Natalie James (Research Staff Officer, Research and Enterprise)

NEW University of Sussex PostDoc-Network - Hear more at the Research Staff Forum on October 28th

This term the Research Staff Forum will play host to the official launch of the University of Sussex PostDoc-Network. This is a network initiated by researchers for researchers and will be inclusive of researchers, teaching fellows and post-doctoral tutors.

Come along to the Forum on Wednesday 28th October, 12 - 1.30pm, Fulton 104 for a free lunch and participate in the first public event of the University of Sussex Postdoc-Network, where you can meet other research & teaching staff from across the University.

"The objective of this event is to kick-start a permanent network of all post-doctoral staff, and pursue future regular meetings as an independent organisation, where we can talk about our experiences in academia, debate current issues in career development, and improve our leadership skills." said Dr Ron Grau, one of the founding members of the PostDoc-Network.

In addition to the launch of the PostDoc-Network we will hear from Dr Anastasia Callaghan, Reader in Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics at the University of Portsmouth and regional representative of the UK Research Staff Association (UKRSA), who will talk about her personal experiences and career benefits of initiating and participating in researcher networks.

CROS 2015 - Sussex and national full reports and recommendations now available

Back in March 41% of you completed the Careers in Research Online Survey, which gathered information about your experiences of being a researcher in the UK at the University of Sussex.

A full analysis of your responses has now been completed and the Research Staff Working Group has agreed a set of recommendations to continue to build on the improvements that have been made since the previous survey in 2013 and to tackle some of the issues you said were important for your research and professional development experiences at Sussex.

The full University of Sussex CROS 2015 report and recommendations is now available on the University's CROS webpage

Vitae have compiled a report of the nationwide response to CROS 2015, which is now available through the Vitae CROS pages, so you can see how Sussex measures up against the experiences of researchers across the UK.

Registration has now opened for the first LGBTSTEMinar. This is a free to attend conference for people across the UK who identify as LGBT and work in or study STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Non-LGBT individuals are also more than welcome to attend.

Open Access: What Lies Ahead? - Seminar for International Open Access Week

Tuesday 20th October, 12-2pm, Library meeting room

Open seminar to mark international open access week.

With momentum gathering around open access, traditional channels of scholarly communications are being redefined. Universities are faced with new challenges in dealing with the changes across all disciplines. This seminar will explore two areas where these changes are being felt: The potential use of metrics to support the transition to a more open and accountable research system and how the shift to open access might impact on the authors of scholarly monographs.

Speakers:

  • Prof James Wilsdon - Professor of Science & Democracy, University of Sussex - "The MetricTide: How can we use responsible metrics to support open science?"
  • Dr James Baker - Lecturer in Digital Humanities, University of Sussex - "Open Access monograph publishing for Arts, Humanities and Social Science Researchers"
