School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Welcome to the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

"Mathematics possesses not only truth, but also supreme beauty"
Bertrand Russell

Welcome to the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, which brings together two outstanding and progressive Departments: the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The School aims to capitalise on the synergy between these subjects to deliver challenging opportunities for its faculty and students.

These opportunities are expansive and open up many new career paths for our graduates: mathematics already plays a major role in disciplines such as economics and computer science and, increasingly, both mathematics and physics are becoming pivotal in the life sciences revolution.

Both Departments have young and vibrant faculty working at the frontiers of their subjects and this is reflected in the recent growth of both subjects at Sussex. Significant further expansion of faculty numbers is underway in each department. We want you, as our students, to share in the great adventures that are just beginning with the advent of facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider and a wide range of exciting new astronomy telescopes both on the ground and in space.

The School is proud of its excellent record in student feedback, including the National Student Survey, and its tradition of involving students closely in all aspects of its degree programmes. As students in the School, you can be sure that your needs are at the centre of our attention and you will have the chance to contribute significantly to the School's future direction and success.
