Sussex Law School students Maddie Adams-Smith and Oliver Lessiter have been named as the winners of this year’s Junior Mooting Competition.
The competition, which took place at the University of Sussex on 22 March, ended in a very closely fought final between the pair and runners up Danielle Kendall and Sam Sweetman.
The problem scenario was tortious, concerning the clinical negligence of a hospital during the birth of a baby. The appeal was regarding the mother’s status as a primary or secondary victim under Tort law.
Having only started mooting last October, all four students were deemed to have made very strong and intelligent submissions which allowed them to have interesting dialogue with the judges.
Ayisha Robertson and Louise Walls from Westgate Chambers, who judged the competition, described making their final decision as "tough", before crowning Maddie and Oliver as this year’s winners.
Thanks go to Lily Bewley-West and Laura Gesiter for organising the competition, and to Westgate Chambers for their continued support.
