School of Life Sciences

Student Mentors

What are Student Mentors?

Student Mentors are 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students employed by the School of Life Sciences to provide academic help to students in their cohort, mainly Foundation, 1st year and 2nd year students.

This role provides students with valuable work experience, and an opportunity to develop various useful vocational skills including communication, teamwork, organisation and time management. These skills are valuable to employers and can put students ahead when it comes to applying for jobs after graduation.

Student Mentors, on request, can be provided a reference to be used in job applications.

How does it work?

Successful candidates will be expected to attend a training session in either Week 2 or Week 3 and then will be invited to a meeting with the Director of Student Experience, Dr Zahid Pranjol and Student Experience Team to plan the student mentor sessions.

Student mentor drop-in sessions will be run in person. These will be hosted and managed by the Student Mentors. They will need to keep a record of students and their concerns and they will need to feed back to the Director of Student Experience and Student Experience Coordinator.

This is a paid position, hourly on submission  with a timesheet on Reed (with a pay rate currently at £11.47 per hour). Student Mentors will be expected to work 2 hours per week from:

  • 23rd October- 15th December 2023
  • 29th January- 22nd March 2024
  • 15th April-3rd May 2024
