Questions and answers

1192. When I double click on an attachment, it doesn’t open and nothing happens.

The problem seems to occur mostly with Word attachments, and is often due to the presence of extra fullstops (periods) in the attachment file name.  Try correcting your mapping settings for opening Word attachments in Mulberry, like this:

  1. Open the File menu (on an Apple Mac, click the Mulberry menu) and choose Preferences.
  2. Select Advanced preferences.
  3. Select the Attachments tab, then select the Receiving tab within that.
  4. Click the Mappings button icon.   This opens up a table of ’Explicit MIME mappings’.
  5. You should see a mapping called ’Application/word’ or ’Application/msword’ or very similar.   Click on this and then click the Change button.
  6. In the MIME Type box, ensure it is set to application.
  7. In the MIME Subtype box, ensure the setting is msword.
  8. In the File box, ensure the setting is .doc (or .docx if you are using Word 2007 or later) -  ensure there is a leading dot.
  9. Click OK, then click OK again.
  10. Click Save Default and then OK.

You should then find that the attachment will open.

If it still won’t open, it could be because the attached file has been named rather strangely, perhaps without an extension or an inappropriate one, such that Windows doesn’t know what application to launch to view the attachment.  If the type of attachment is known (e.g. it’s known to be a Word file but doesn’t have a .doc extension), right-click the attachment name and select Extract parts from the menu that appears.  The attachment should then be saved to the default attachment storage area with its original name (the rightmost item in the attachment window).  Use the Windows file explorer to rename that file to something more sensible and with the correct extension, and then double click it to open it.
