How can I use Windows Remote on a Mac?


The best way to connect to Windows Remote from a Mac is to use Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac. It's available as a free download from the Mac App Store and when installed:

  • click on Microsoft Remote Desktop in the Applications folder or the Dock
  • click on New to add a new connection
  • for PC name, enter windows-remote.sussex.ac.uk
  • in the credentials section, for user name, enter ad_us\ followed by your IT username
  • close the window to save the settings
  • to open the connection, click on Windows Remote in the My desktops section to highlight it and then click Start (you may also need to click Continue if presented with a certificate warning).
  • to close the connection when you're in full screen mode, move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen and, from the Window menu, choose Close Connection

Resolution and Colours
You can normally leave these set to the default settings (native Resolution and Highest Quality colours) but if performance is too slow, you can adjust these to make the screen smaller and the colours less accurate in order to speed up the connection.

Full screen
The default setting is to open the connection in Full Screen mode but you can untick this option if you prefer to view it in a window.
