Connecting to Exchange with Mulberry

The University's new Microsoft Exchange server handles all staff and research postgraduate email and calendaring.   The recommended email and calendaring application will be Outlook on PCs or Macs, or Outlook Web Access (OWA) through a web browser.  For more details see sussex.ac.uk/its/mailexchange.

Exchange supports IMAP connections as used by Mulberry, but we cannot guarantee that full IMAP functionality will be available because Exchange is primarily designed to use its own MAPI protocol. Also, as Mulberry makes use of some IMAP extensions which are not supported by Exchange, some features that used to work in Mulberry may no longer work with Exchange.

To use Mulberry with the Exchange server, you need to make a simple change to your account settings in Mulberry as follows:

  1. Open the File menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Click the Accounts tab.
  4. Select your Sussex IMAP account from the Account: box.
  5. In the Server: box, change the server setting, from
mail.sussex.ac.uk (the setting for the Cyrus system)
    to
imap.exchange.sussex.ac.uk (the setting for the Exchange system)

  6. Select your SMTP account from the Account: box.
  7. Check that the server setting is smtp.sussex.ac.uk:587
Change it if necessary to that setting, but otherwise leave this and the other settings in this panel unchanged.

  8. Click on Save Default.
  9. Click OK.
