Laptop & headphonesWeb conferencing tools

Web conferencing tools enable you to have a group of students all logged in to a single collaborative session in which you can:

  • share slides and other documents on a virtual whiteboard
  • have students and other participants annotate the whiteboard
  • create a document based on the whiteboard (including annotations) for distribution after the event
  • have a video stream of you and other participants (if you want to)
  • have easy to use icons that let your participants signal if they don't understand, agree/disagree etc
  • run quick surveys of opinions in the group
  • .. and it can all be integrated simply with Study Direct for ease of management

The University has invested in the web conferencing system Adobe Connect.

How might web conferencing tools work for you? Here are just a few of the ways that colleagues in Sussex Institute for Education are thinking of using web conferencing:

  • for 1 to 1 support sessions with students on international degrees or currently taking part in teaching practice placements
  • for small seminar group discussions with students on international degrees
  • to give students around the world the chance to experience live participation in the various seminars that the education research groups run

Web conferencing obviously makes a lot of sense for settings with distance learners such as the International Doctorate in Education. But it might also be a real help for you and your students if they (or even you) are unable to come to campus.
