Software on student PCs

The student PCs in computer rooms on the campus, including teaching PCs in lecture theatres and seminar rooms, have the following software.

ArcGIS Desktop

Geographical Information System (GIS)

ArcGIS is used for: creating and using maps compiling geographic data analyzing mapped information sharing and discovering geographic information using maps and geographic information in a range of applications and managing geographic information in a database.

ArcGis Desktop Contains:

  • ArcGlobe
    This application is generally designed to be used with very large datasets and allows for seamless visualization of both raster and feature data.
  • ArcScene
    3D viewer that is well suited to generating perspective scenes that allow you to navigate and interact with your 3D feature and raster data.
  • ArcMap
    Used primarily to view, edit, create, and analyze geospatial data. ArcMap allows the user to explore data within a data set, symbolize features accordingly, and create maps.
  • ArcCatalog
    Used to organize, work with, and manage geographic information in workspaces and geodatabases.
  • ArcGis Document Defragmenter
    A utility which defragments the storage inside an ArcMap document (MXD) file to potentially reduce the file size. Also useful if your MXD files are large in size. The utility can also defragment ArcScene documents (SXD), ArcGlobe documents (3DD) and ArcMap templates (MXT).
  • MXD Doctor
    The MXD Doctor utility provides functionality to analyze broken ArcMap document (.mxd) files

The software can be used for research, however please note this license term:

Paid for Research Prohibited
Sites are not allowed to use the software for paid for research. For example, paid for research includes when a student/researcher is sponsored by a company to complete research and the company then owns the research for use in their commercial business. This is not allowed. If, however, a student/researcher is sponsored by a company to complete their PhD/project but the student owns the outcome then this is allowed.
