First aid

  • In an emergency, please call the 24-hour Emergency hotline on x 3333 (external line: 01273 87 3333)

The call goes through to Security who will arrange for a Mobile First Aider to attend the first aid call.
If the emergency services are required, Security and the mobile first aider will co-ordinate the response.
  • The School also operates a register of First Aid volunteers (listed by building below) who may be able to render assistance faster because they are closer to the action.

  • First Aid (FA) Volunteer role

Speed of response is critical for a number of medical emergencies.
The local FA volunteers can often get to a situation faster, because of their physical proximity.
They are trained to provide front-line assistance for major health disruptions, especially important because the University campus-wide Emergency Response Team will have a fair distance to cover to get to many locations on campus, which delays the assistance they bring.
Density of local FA volunteer cover is determined by the nature of local activities and equipment, reflecting the risks colleagues and students are explosed to.
  • Train in Emergency First Aid at Work

Would you rather know what to do if a colleague/student were facing a medical emergency?
Speak to your supervisor, or contact Margarita Steinberg (x 7600) to discuss training as a First Aid volunteer.
  • First Aid kits

First Aid kits are included in the summary of local First Aid provision for each building (above).
The School has access to First Aid kits located in the public areas (maintained by Estates).
Some labs and workshops also keep First Aid kits for easy access, as part of their risk control measures (maintained by the School).
Contact Margarita Steinberg (x 7600) about getting your First Aid kit replenished or replaced.
