School of English

Current Research Postgraduates (PhD Students)

As a research student in the School of English you are a valued member of the School of English academic community, and your contribution is vital to the spirit of critical inquiry at the heart of the Sussex tradition.

We encourage you to familiarise yourself with the different research events taking place throughout the year (keep an eye on the School of English Signpost and check your e-mail account regularly), which will help you to become part of the lively research community at the heart of the School.

As a first point of contact for all queries that your supervisor cannot help with, please see the Research Coordinator Laura Vellacott in the English School Office: Arts B Room 133; Tel: 01273 873 429; Email: The Director of Doctoral Studies, Dr Richard Adelman, is also very happy to meet with you to talk through any aspect of your doctoral journey.

You will find it useful to have an up to date copy of the English Doctoral Researcher Handbook. It is also important to have a copy of the generic handbook for all research students across the university, containing information on registration, progression and examination matters. This handbook (together with lots of other helpful information) can be found on the Research Student Administration website.

The Doctoral School is a University-wide structure supporting doctoral research across all Schools of Study. Sussex has over 1000 doctoral researchers and The Doctoral School seeks to integrate all doctoral students as thriving members of the wider University research community. It offers support and guidance, training and development as well as access to funding opportunities to make your time here as rewarding and constructive as possible.
