Security FAQs
- What level of protection is given to the campus community?
-
Our Security Office is open 24 hours, seven days a week 365 days per year with permanent Officers on duty throughout. An emergency number (ext. 3333) is provided for an immediate response to any emergency or life threatening situation. Help and professional advice is available to help create a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, business and community partners and visitors. All Security Officers are Security Industry and first aid trained.
- What is done to protect my office and building where I work?
-
Each unit should have a securing procedure at the end of each working day, and during working hours arrangements for staff to safely store personal property. Officers patrol campus on a 24 hour basis ensuring that out of working hours premises are secure. CCTV and other crime prevention equipment is monitored to detect and prevent crime. Internal patrols are undertaken on an irregular basis and named persons are informed of an emergency situation arising in an 'out of hours' experimentation area.
- Are security related incidents tracked?
-
All incident records are entered into a reporting system and analysed to provide support data which can be cross referenced to correlate information to efficiently answer questions and generate reports. Regular analysis of data ensures that Security Officers are used to the optimum affect and that Units are made aware of any crime trends/need for extra vigilance.
- Do Security control traffic flow when problems occur?
-
Officers ensure that all impediments to the free-flow of traffic are removed as expeditiously as possible, while in the meantime assisting the flow of traffic. When there is a need for road/car park closure/diversions, Security Officers ensure sufficient temporary arrangements are in place to ensure safety/sufficient movement. Entry to Visitors' Car Parks and restricted areas are controlled by means of remote control and CCTV use.
- Whilst on normal patrol, do staff check anything else?
-
Officers regularly assist in the maintenance of Health & Safety standards to ensure that defects in paving, roads, lights or any other matter affecting Health & Safety are made safe temporarily and reported to the appropriate person for rectification. A weekly check on all campus emergency telephones and fire alarms is carried out making sure systems are operational. On closure days, when the Security Unit is the sole representative of the University present, Officers discharge the University's duty of care to residents.
- Whilst on normal patrol, do staff check anything else?
-
Escorting of cash and other items of high value together with escorting persons carrying such items in transit on campus are undertaken in accordance with the Unit's Risk Assessment. Other duties include the safe transfer of examination papers between sites on campus. As far as reasonably possible, particular 'at risk' visitors are protected while on University premises with Risk Assessment in conjunction with police.
- What happens in the event of a major emergency situation?
-
The safety and well-being of the campus community is an essential priority for the good management of the University of Sussex. In the event of a major incident, our aim is to ensure as early a recovery of normal University activity as possible. Our tested Major Incident Plan (initiated by the Security Office in an emergency) provides a set of effective and practical measures to recover normal business operations and protect the University's reputation.
