Crime

The campus is a safe environment with a relatively low crime rate, nevertheless everyone should take care of their personal possessions and be alert to possible miscreants.

Crime prevention

Security staff liaise closely with Sussex Police on crime prevention and from time to time undertake poster and leaflet publicity on the subject.

The Security team produces crime-prevention information for inclusion in student documentation and for staff training purposes.

An extensive CCTV system is monitored for the safety of all campus users and to deter criminal acts.

Any matter giving concern in this respect should be reported to Security using the emergency telephone number 01273 (87)3333.

Victim of crime?

For initial action at the scene of a crime, telephone 01273 (87) 3333 or 01273 (67) 8234.

A Security Officer will attend and assist with the retention of the crime scene and advise on liaison with the police.

According to circumstances the police may or may not attend for some time, but an investigating officer will be appointed.

In the case of University property, the Security Unit will take responsibility for reporting the crime. However, the completion of insurance claim forms is the responsibility of the losing unit.

The University insurance policy does not cover personal items.

Personal contents insurance is included in the rent of students who live in University-managed accommodation. However, any students who have particularly valuable items may wish to extend this cover with the University's insurance provider, Endsleigh.

Even if you do not need assistance at the scene of a crime, it would be appreciated if you could report any crime to Security so that the Unit can take steps to prevent further offences.

All incident records are entered into a reporting system and are analysed to provide support data that can be cross referenced to correlate information to efficiently answer questions and generate reports. Regular analysis of data ensures that Security Officers are used to the optimum affect and that units are made aware of any crime trends and any need for extra vigilance.

Should it be required, the Security Unit will give advice to minimise the possibility of crime repetition. Should a crime pattern develop on campus, the Security Unit will circulate this information to staff and students.
