Food

We have composting facilities in the following locations:

  • Essex House
  • Falmer House
  • Freeman Centre
  • Friston Building
  • Hastings Building, main corridor
  • JMS rear exit
  • Mantell Building
  • Meeting House
  • Pevensey 2 & 3 Buildings
  • Sussex House
  • Arts B

Please place uncooked food, such as fruit peelings, tea bags, flowers etc in the compost bins. The content of these bins is put onto the compost heaps in the green waste compound.

We have food waste segregation facilities in the following locations:

Since September 2012 the University has been segregating food waste from our catering outlets.

  • Arts Piazza Cafe
  • Bramber House
  • Dhaba Cafe
  • Drs Orders Cafe
  • Falmer Bar
  • Falmer Sports Complex
  • IDS Bar and Cafe
  • Library Cafe
  • Pevensey Bridge Cafe

We currently produce approx 7 tonnes of food waste per month which is diverted from landfill and energy recovery to an In-Vessell Composting Facility.

The method of composting confines the food waste within a building, in which air flow and temperature are controlled. The final result is used in horticultural, amenity and agricultural markets.

Therefore our food waste is no longer used to recover energy as part of an energy recovery facility but is converted into compost used on land.
