Message from the Research Staff Office

Hello everyone

Welcome to this issue of the Sussex Researcher. We've reached the end of the 15/16 academic year, the busiest yet for the Research Staff Office, and have just completed the final workshops of this year's programme. Thank you to everyone that participated in the events throughout the year; we are looking forward to bringing you even more development events over the course of 2016/17 and we'll be releasing details and booking information about the new programme later in the Summer.

This summer we are inviting you to take a pause in your hectic days to take an appreciative tour of our campus surroundings and email or tweet (#SussexInSummer) your photos of your favourite spots - see our Sussex in Summer article for more information, we look forward to seeing your contributions.

Best wishes and enjoy the summer,

Natalie James (Research Staff Officer) and Kirsty Bridger (Researcher Development Coordinator)

Events

At this time of year we have a break from training and development workshops and are working hard to put together the programme of events for the next academic year.

The 2016/17 Research Staff Development Series programme information will be available towards the end of August and bookings for autumn term events will open at the beginning of September.

In 2015/2016 we ran 23 Workshops and 1 Webinar with a total attendance of 276 attendees. 91% of attendees that completed an evaluation form said that they would recommend research staff development workshops to other researchers.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the events this year and contributed to the continuing success of the programme.

As always please do get in contact with any feedback, we're happy to recieve your suggestions regarding events you would like to see in the programme, email us at: researchstaffoffice@sussex.ac.uk.

News
Sussex in Summer

During the summer months at the University of Sussex it is hard not to appreciate working in such beautiful surroundings and this month we're inviting all Sussex researchers to celebrate our campus in summer through photography.

We invite you to take a few minutes out for a walk over the next month and send us a photograph of anywhere around the campus that you appreciate in the summer months.

You can either email your photograph to researchstaffoffice@sussex.ac.uk or tweet it using the hashtag #SussexInSummer.

Photos will be posted on our twitter account (@SussexResearchr).

We look forward to seeing where you find your summer solace. For inspiration, here's a couple of photos from the Research Staff Office.

University Counselling Service offers a new online self-help application

A new self-help, web-based application, for students and staff, is now available via the Counselling Service's webpage.

Called Silver Cloud, the online application offers confidential guidance and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based programmes to current students and staff on issues concerning anxiety, depression, managing stress and eating issues. The interactive programmes consist of six to seven modules that can be completed at your own pace and can be accessed from any device.

Commitment to equality for women researchers at Global Research Council annual meeting

Heads of research agencies from nearly 50 countries - large and small, with developed and emerging economies - adopted a Statement of Principles and Actions Promoting the Equality and Status of Women in Research at the Global Research Council's fifth annual meeting last month in New Delhi.

Find out more about the commitment here.

Words of Wisdom

Postdoctoral researchers often receive insight or advice from their supervisors that stays with them for the remainder of their lives. Good advice at the right time can make a huge difference, especially in the early stages of a career. Unfortunately, not everyone who seeks advice has access to it. Although there is plenty of guidance on the mechanics of writing a thesis or a grant proposal, there is much less on maintaining morale, overcoming obstacles, and keeping things in perspective.

Words of Wisdom: Cherished advice from academic mentors, published by the Global Young Academy brings together outstanding examples of supervisors' words of wisdom, and makes them accessible to all. There are quotes relating to a broad range of themes including: confidence, work-life balance, writing, mindset, working with others and many more. Whatever challenge you are facing in your research career you are likely to find a message to provide motivation within this uplifting book.

The collection includes 76 contributions from 31 countries on 6 continents with the hope that they will be a source of inspiration and support to early-career researchers worldwide.

The book can be accessed via our Researcher Wellbeing page.

RCUK's Statement on International Collaboration Post Brexit

In light of the EU Referendum, Research Councils UK have released a statement asserting their commitment to facilitating research collaboration across Europe and the rest of the world. It states RCUK's commitment to supporting researchers from EU nations currently working in the UK and acknowledges the importance of researcher mobility.

RCUK has confirmed that the UK's participation in major European partnerships that are not part of EU institutions (e.g. CERN, ESO, ESA) will not be affected by the Referendum decision.

Whilst the UK currently remains a full member of the EU, RCUK encourages researchers to apply for European funding schemes and states that the Research Councils will honour existing commitments through EU funded programmes.

The RCUK's statement can be found in full here.

The primary emphasis is on completion of a significant piece of publishable research, which will be assisted by full membership of an academic community of established scholars working in similar fields.

Awards cover the salary of the Postdoctoral Fellow to work full-time on the Fellowship, small-scale research expenses (up to a maximum of £6,000), costs towards the time of a mentor (equivalent to one hour per month for the 36 months of the Fellowship) and the host institution's estates and indirect costs.
