Community Engagement

Sussex Roots

Sussex Roots is an entirely student-run communal gardening society organised as part of the Students' Union, which is involved in maintaining the site behind Brighthelm residences and the newly renovated sensory garden in Norwich House crèche. The Grounds team has worked hard to collaborate with Sussex Roots when developing various plantings and green areas on campus, especially the allotments which have formed the cornerstone of the society.

Bee Habitats

In collaboration with professors and staff from the School of Life Sciences, the Grounds team has worked on building and maintaining habitats for pollinators, primarily solitary bees. Solitary bees have diverse nesting habits, and will often nest in stems, cavities, and in the ground. Thus, designated bee habitats are situated nearby flower-rich areas containing suitable species for bees, including pea and daisy families.
