School of Psychology

The study of psychology informs our thinking on many of the most difficult issues that our world faces.

The School of Psychology is one of the largest centres for the study of psychology in the UK. We have about 45 academic faculty, 100 doctoral research students and over 100 postgraduate students taking Masters degrees. Our undergraduate intake is about 260 a year, which gives us an academic community of some 1000 people working in a rich and supportive learning environment.

Teaching and research

In The Independent's Complete University Guide (2019) Sussex University is ranked 12th in the UK to study psychology. Our programmes offer an excellent grounding in the core areas of the subject, and at the same time provide plenty of choice so that our students can pursue their own interests and develop their own specialisms.

Psychology at Sussex was ranked tenth out of 82 submissions in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. Overall, 100% of our research was rated as recognised internationally  or better, of which 45% of our research was recognised as world leading and 46% of our research was recognised as internationally excellent. Also notable is that for both impact and environment - two of the three assessment criteria that contribute to the overall rating - 100% of our Psychology research was rated as recognised internationally excellent or better.
