Get Started

1.  Tell the Research Office !

Alert the research office of your intentions and your main requirements by completing the proforma.

Do this as soon as possible.  At least 6 weeks before the funder's deadline.

Download the MPS Research Grant Proforma from this page

Send the completed proforma to the Research Development Team (research_support@sussex.ac.uk ) with a copy to the Research Support Team in the MPS School Office ( mpsresearchsupport@sussex.ac.uk ) and to the Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange (A.Banfi@Sussex.ac.uk) .

After the submission of the proforma, ask the Research Development Team to perform a preliminary costing of the proposal, to check if co-funding is needed from the School or the University. If co-funding is needed please follow the instructions here.

2.  Who are your 'critical friends' ?

Get your critical friend(s) on board.  Send him/her the grant guidelines/guidance.

Get their agreement to help you about 6 weeks before the funder's deadline.

For all grant applications, the PI must ensure there is a quality check by a critical friend, with three exceptions

  • Small grants (< £10K value).
  • Grants which are collaborative with the lead investigator outside MPS
  • Fellowship applications where the Fellow has written the case for support and the hosting Sussex PI is senior faculty (Reader or Professor).  In this case the Sussex PI can take the role of 'critical friend'.
