Fake HMRC tax refund emails

Posted: Thu 16 May 2019, 2:32pm.

More fake emails are arriving in Sussex inboxes, this time with the subject line:
HMRC estimate your Income Tax for a previous tax year - GOV.UK 2018/19

These emails contain a link to claim a tax refund. The link will take you to a fake website designed to steal your personal information.

Most of these emails have been sent by Hotmail addresses, but you may also receive one from a Sussex account that's been compromised when the owner has given away their password as part of another phishing scam.

Do not follow the link in these emails. They are a type of phishing attack. If you ever think you might have given away your password, please change it immediately in Sussex Direct and then contact the IT Service Desk.

IT Services is working to improve email security, and we hope to see a reduction in these kinds of phishing emails later in the year.
