Look out for these two convincing phishing emails

IT Services block most malicious phishing emails that are sent to your University email account, but unfortunately some will get through.

Phishing is:

Any website, online service, phone call or text message that pretends to be a company or brand you recognise. Any contact like this is designed to convince you to hand over valuable personal details or your money, or download something that infects your computer.

Today, two convincing phishing emails have been reported to the IT Service Desk by ITS users:

  1. Subject: RE: Microsoft Outlook Verification portal !
This email claims that your Microsoft Outlook account has been temporarily disabled, and provides a link to verify your account
  2. Subject: Information Technology Services (ITS
This message claims that we are migrating all email accounts into Outlook Web App 2018 and provides a link to sign in

In both cases, the link leads to a fake website designed to trick you into giving away your login details. If you do this, your account will be hijacked to send more malicious spam and your emails may be deleted.

The best defence against online crime is awareness. Please review the IT Services security advice, and see the latest threats that have been reported to the IT Service Desk, at sussex.ac.uk/its/security
