Reminder to staff: don’t shut down your desktop PC at night

Posted: Fri 11 May 2018, 2:53pm.

IT Services would like to remind all staff to leave your desktop PC switched on when you leave at the end of each day. You should log out but not shut the machine down.

Your computer will only receive essential updates overnight. If it’s switched off, your PC will miss updates and this will affect the performance of your computer and may require maintenance from a member of ITS staff. If it receives updates later, it may take a long time to install them and this could interrupt your work.

Sussex Desktops are designed to enter a low-power mode overnight so the environmental impact of leaving your computer on is very small - our testing and research suggests that they will use 1 Watt more than when fully powered down.
