Using Eudora for email

This guide describes how to configure the email client Eudora to use the correct settings for accessing your Sussex email securely from outside the University.

NB: These examples are based on the Macintosh version of Eudora for MacOS X. However, the Preference settings will be the same on a Windows PC.

Make sure you have the latest full version of Eudora. This should be version 6.2.3 or later, for Mac and PC. Earlier versions can be set to our recommended configuration, but only with difficulty.

Once you have downloaded and run the installer, you need to make these changes to the preference settings. Launch Eudora and go to the Preferences item under the Eudora item on the menu bar. A window should open that looks like the following.

Click on the Getting Started icon and fill in the boxes as shown, substituting your university Username, and Real Name for the ones illustrated here. For the Mail Server type in

mail.sussex.ac.uk

and for the SMTP Server type in

smtp.sussex.ac.uk

Do not fill in any of the other boxes. Click OK

Scroll down to the Sending Mail icon. A setting window opens. Fill in the appropriate boxes with the examples given, substituting your own name for return Address.

Please note that the Return address is NOT your username. The name that it shows you is your "friendly name" that you can use here for your Return Address. Your username should be in this form -

suzannel

or it may be a string of letter and a digit e.g.

dml25

Using port 587

For reasons explained in FAQ 1173, it's important to select the Use submission port (587) option.

If you have an earlier version of Eudora, then it is probably easier to upgrade Eudora than to configure them to use port 587. If you can't, or don't want to upgrade, then instructions for using port 587 follow.

Using port 587 with older versions of Eudora

To do this you need to quit Eudora. If you are using MacOS X you need to navigate to the folder where the Eudora application is installed - usually the Applications folder, although it may be in your personal Applications folder. Go to the Eudora application and click and hold the mouse button so the contextual menu appears, which will look like this --

Select Show Package Contents. A new window opens and displays a hierarchy of new folders. Click on the Contents folder, then the MacOS folder, then the Extra Plugins folder. Drag the file Esoteric Settings 5.1 into the Eudora Stuff folder. Close all your folders and restart Eudora.

Once you have re-launched Eudora you need to go to the Preferences menu again, and this time there are a lot of additional configuration items listed. Scroll down to Ports and Protocols. Change the SMTP port number from 25 to 587. Click OK, and restart Eudora.

Next click on the Checking Mail icon. In this window you need to type in your username (see above), and the mailhost. You also need to make sure that IMAP is selected as the Mail protocol.

Leave the Location prefix box empty. Select a time for your mail to be checked - probably every 10 minutes is a reasonable time limit. Leave the rest of the settings as they are.

Next you need to scroll down until you see the icon saying SSL. Under the heading Secure Sockets Layer you need to select the settings as shown in the picture below.

Note the warning about SSL support not being available for MacOS 10.0 or 10.1. Save these settings.

To open your mail go to the Check Mail item under the File menu. The first time you run this you will get a message box with a warning about the SSL certificate, as shown below.

Click OK to accept the certificate. You may find that you need to relaunch Eudora following this message. This should be all you need to do.
