Email settings


This page gives the general settings that you will need to connect almost any mail program with your Sussex email.

 

Email on your mobile device

To check your Sussex email or calendar on your mobile device, we recommend you use the Outlook mobile app.  You can find more information about this on this page.

Mail systems

There are two email systems at Sussex, one for students and one for staff and researchers.

You can connect to them with the details given below.

The student email system

This mail service is being introduced in the summer vacation 2015 and all undergraduates and taught postgraduates will be transferred to it from June onwards.

Webmail

  • Login with webmail
    You will automatically be directed to the new system when your account has been transferred.

Connect as an Exchange account

If you want to use your email with a standalone program such as Outlook, Thunderbird or the email program on your phone:

  • choose to add a new Exchange account
  • enter your email address and password
  • your device should find the settings automatically and add your account

Connect as an IMAP/internet account

You can also add your email as an IMAP account using these settings for incoming mail:

  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Encryption: SSL using port 993
  • Authentication: Required - enter your IT username like this: ano23@sussex.ac.uk and password

and for outgoing mail:

  • Server: smtp.office365.com
  • Encryption: STARTTLS using port 587
  • Authentication: Required - enter your IT username like this: ano23@sussex.ac.uk and password

The staff email system

This service is used by staff and research postgraduates.

Webmail

  • Login with webmail
    You will automatically be directed to the new system when your account has been transferred.

Connect as an Exchange account

If you want to use your email with a standalone program such as Outlook, Thunderbird or the email program on your phone:

  • choose to add a new Exchange account
  • enter your email address and password
  • your device should find the settings automatically and add your account
  • If you are asked for additional settings, use the following:
    • Serverexchange.sussex.ac.uk

    •  Domain: ad_us

    •  Domain\username:  ad_us\username

    •  Password: Your IT Services password

Connect as an IMAP account

You can also add your email as an IMAP account using these settings for incoming mail:

  • Server: imap.exchange.sussex.ac.uk
  • Encryption: SSL using port 993
  • Authentication: Required - enter your IT username (e.g. ano23) and password

and for outgoing mail:

  • Server: smtp.sussex.ac.uk
  • Encryption: SSL using port 587 or port 465
  • Authentication: Required - enter your IT username (e.g. ano23) and password
