Research and knowledge exchange

Early Career Researcher Mentors

Do you want to develop your interpersonal and communication skills and give back to less experienced research colleagues? Sign up to mentor PGRs at our event on 5 June.

With guidance from their mentors, we hope our postgraduate researchers (PGRs) will gain insights to further develop their skills and increase their confidence beyond their research degree and into a successful academic career.

We are recruiting a diverse pool of mentors across a variety of disciplines, to cater to the diverse goals of PGRs. The mentees you are paired with may not be based in your disciplinary area. The focus is on career development more generally, and offering different perspectives outside School bubbles.

ECR is defined as staff on a research-only contract at grades 6-8, broadly encompassing research assistants, postdoctoral researchers and research fellows.

Objectives

As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to:

  • involve yourselves with the work of PGRs across Schools at Sussex
  • offer insights into new or different career advancement approaches
  • reflect on your own career progression
  • gain recognition for your skills, knowledge, and contribution as a mentor, developing your professional profile to put towards ADRs and promotion applications
  • support PGRs to develop their skills and boost their confidence
  • expand your network with PGRs and ECRs

Registration

Registration for ECR mentors has now closed.

For those not selected for this special mentoring session, Organisational Development (OD) offer other opportunities to engage, network with and learn from colleagues at Sussex. Visit the OD mentoring webpage for more information.

Make the most of the session

As a mentor, you will provide advice from your own experience. To ensure that the arrangement is productive and meaningful for both the mentee and mentor, you will need to foster the right skills to create an environment for growth.

The session will begin with a warm-up introduction. To prepare in advance, visit the OD guidance for mentors webpage for mentoring tips.
