Studying effectively and staying well for neurodivergent students
Our session starts with some brief social time over tea and biscuits/fruit, then we will be hosted by two experienced neurodivergent facilitators, who are both doctoral researchers based in Global Studies, and will be sharing their lived and professional experiences.
Attending this session you will:
- Learn techniques for preserving your mental energy.
- Reflect on your individual needs and potentially co-occurring conditions or contexts.
- Learn about different kinds of burnout and how they manifest
- Do a gentle art activity to give you time for personal reflection.
- Experience a sense of community through being together.
Our Facilitators:
Niamh Bowden (he/him) is an early-stage doctoral researcher and a Global Studies student mentor. He specialises in disability studies. Niamh has chronic fatigue and ADHD, so he has experience with exhaustion from university. He will be explaining how to preserve mental energy and stay efficient while studying. He will later be leading a group discussion around the techniques that others use and how a combination of different practices can fit around individual needs and study styles. Attendees will leave with a list of potential techniques for reducing mental strain in study and an understanding of how to tailor these techniques to their own lifestyles.
Beth Sutton (she/they) is in the latter stages of doctoral research, specialising in neurodivergence and neurodevelopmental conditions. Beth will be delivering a new interactive workshop at this event. Drawing on lived, professional and clinical expertise within the NHS, Beth will start by conceptualising burnout in various forms. They will then explore a wide range of neurodivergent-friendly ways to stay well at university, culminating in an art activity that invites attendees to reflect more personally on the topics discussed. All art materials will be provided. Attendees can expect to develop a deeper awareness of their early warning signs of burnout and strategies for recovery.
