Please summarise why you opted to complete an apprenticeship instead of other educational career paths.
I chose to pursue an apprenticeship over other educational paths because it offered a practical and flexible approach to learning. Initially, I wanted to complete the Level 5 Apprenticeship in Operational Management at my previous workplace, but they didn't provide this opportunity. When I joined Sussex in April 2024, I discovered they offered this fantastic program to their staff. During my induction, I signed up to learn more about the registration process and subsequently received approval from my manager. One of the key benefits of the apprenticeship is that all the required evidence is generated through my daily work activities. The study component is manageable, requiring about 4 hours a week for reading and compiling evidence to demonstrate the application of knowledge, skills, and behaviours in the workplace, this is flexible, some week I do less and other weeks more. This option suits me perfectly, as I don't have the time to commit to part-time or full-time studies.
Could you share how the apprenticeship has helped you to deepen your understanding and skills for your role?
The apprenticeship has significantly enhanced my understanding and skills in several ways. Firstly, it has provided me with a structured learning framework that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application. This combination has allowed me to directly apply new concepts and techniques to my daily tasks, reinforcing my learning through real-world experience. Additionally, the apprenticeship has encouraged me to reflect on my work practices and identify areas for improvement. By compiling evidence and documenting my progress, I have gained a deeper insight into my strengths and areas where I can develop further. This reflective practice has been invaluable in fostering a continuous improvement mindset. Overall, the apprenticeship has not only deepened my technical skills but also enhanced my critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and professional confidence.
How do/did you balance your work and study commitments?
To balance my work and study commitments, I rely on my Outlook calendar to plan and manage my time effectively. During particularly busy weeks, I prioritise my work tasks and temporarily set aside my studies without worrying about falling behind. However, when I encounter tasks that could serve as valuable evidence for my apprenticeship, I take screenshots and save them in a Word document as I complete the work. During quieter periods, I revisit this document to annotate and organise the evidence.
What are some of the benefits of doing an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships offer a range of benefits, including:
Hands-on Experience: Apprenticeships provide practical, on-the-job training, allowing you to gain real-world experience while learning.
Earn While You Learn: You receive a salary while completing your apprenticeship, making it a financially viable option compared to traditional education paths.
Skill Development: Apprenticeships focus on developing specific skills relevant to your chosen field, enhancing your employability, helping you grow both personally and professionally.
Career Advancement: Completing an apprenticeship can open doors to advanced roles and career opportunities within your industry.
Structured Learning: Apprenticeships combine theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of your field.
Networking Opportunities: You build connections with industry professionals, which can be beneficial for future career prospects.
Overall, apprenticeships provide a balanced approach to learning, combining education with practical experience to prepare you for a successful career.
Aside from the theory and new skills what else has the apprentices programme provided you?
Aside from the theory and new skills, the apprenticeship program has provided me with invaluable opportunities for career advancement. By combining the knowledge gained from the apprenticeship with my extensive experience in further education and my recent insights from working in higher education over the past year, I have successfully secured a new role at the university as Quality Manager for Apprenticeships.
What can you reveal about yourself that few people know?
I used to teach Beauty Therapy and led the department for 18 years, whilst also running my own Beauty Training Academy.
