Jayne Aldridge, Director for the Student Experience wrote to all Professional Services staff on Tuesday 12 Augyst. You can read the message in full:
Dear Colleagues,
Following the incredible success of last year’s initiative to bring staff and students together during their transition into the new academic year, we’re excited to once again invite you to support during Welcome Week and Registration, beginning 19 September.
Staff involvement last year made a meaningful impact. By simply being present and approachable, colleagues helped create a sense of community and belonging from day one. That support played a vital role in students’ positive transition to life at Sussex, and we’re eager to build on that momentum.
Why your support matters
We know that a warm and well-organised welcome can significantly influence a student’s experience and their decision to stay at Sussex. Whether students are new or returning, those first few days on campus are pivotal.
Staff are a key part of this welcome and we are asking you to get involved and support our Welcome Week and Registration activities. Your support, even for half a day, can make a big difference.
The impact you can have is so important to our students as every interaction matters. You can hear more in this short (1 min 30 sec) video where we asked some students and alumni to tell us their thoughts about our staff at Sussex.
How you can help
We’re asking staff to get involved by supporting a range of Welcome Week and Registration activities from 19 September to 3 October. Tasks include:
- helping students find their way to the right service in the Student Centre and across campus
- giving out ID cards to students who have registered
- assisting with international students’ registration
- Celebration Event support – Friday 26 September (Jubilee Building)
Will you be briefed in advance?
Yes! Full briefings will be provided, along with on-the-day guidance to ensure you feel confident in your role. No prior experience is needed – just bring your energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to support.
Whether you can spare a half a day, or a full day, your time and presence will be greatly appreciated. Every interaction matters – and often, just a friendly face can make all the difference. Parents and carers appreciate it too!
How to sign up
Please register your availability using the Welcome Week and Registration sign-up form.
What else is happening?
Welcome Week is a full week of orientation activities – including registration support, campus tours, and social events – culminating in a Celebration Day on Friday 26 September to help students integrate into the Sussex community.
We’ll also be encouraging staff to wear ‘Ask Me’ badges during this period, so students know they can approach you with any questions.
More information about the 2025 Welcome Week programme will be shared soon.
Thank you in advance for playing a part in making Sussex a welcoming, supportive place for all our students. Your contribution truly matters.
Warm regards,
Jayne Aldridge
