Everyone has a right to be healthy and safe at work, and part of staying safe involves being aware of health and safety hazards you may come across whilst working at the University.
At Sussex, mandatory Health and Safety Essentials e-learning is available for all staff on LearnUpon. The course provides you with a practical guide to staying safe, remaining informed and being prepared for general workplace hazards, with much of the course being applicable to life outside of work as well. This general information supports any specific procedures and safe practices which may be in place in your Faculty or Division.
Once you complete the course, you’ll be able to:
- spot hazards in your work area and at home, such as hazards relating to manual handling and display screen equipment
- identify actions you can take to help reduce the risk presented by these hazards
- understand health and safety signage you see around campus
- understand your responsibilites as an employee under health and safety law
The course also introduces you to other common everyday hazards such as slips, trips and falls, hazardous substances and working from height - for example, if you use stepladders.
If you come across hazards on a regular basis as part of your work, we also recommend you search our LearnUpon training catalogue to complete some of our other e-learning courses that go into more detail about some of these specific hazards. More information is also available on our Health and Safety A-Z.
Remember to make sure you log in to LearnUpon to complete your mandatory Health and Safety Essentials e-learning in preparation for your 2025 Annual Development Review.
