Students hear from panellists at the BMEc Mentors Placement Q&A
Students from the School of Business, Management and Economics (BMEc) have received guidance for finding professional placements by speaking to recent graduates and previous placement students - many of whom are also Student Mentors - at a recent event held by the School.
Attendees heard first-hand student experiences of the complete placement process, from applying for positions, to finding work after graduating.
Students heard from a panel of experts including:
- Jo Budd, Business Liaison and Placements Officer
- Susanna Davis, Careers and Employability Consultant
- Caitlin Brown, final year Economics BA student and Student Mentor (completed placement with PwC Belfast)
- Giles Crisp, final year Business and Management Studies BSc student and Student Mentor (completed placement with Hewlett Packard Enterprise)
- Zoe Cogger, finalist Business and Management Studies BSc student (completed placement with Givaudan)
- Liam Ward, Business and Management Studies BSc graduate (completed placement and found a graduate job with Sussex Innovation Centre, now managing a team of BMEc placement students)
Top tips for finding a placement included:
- find something that sets you apart from other students applying for placements i.e. get involved in a society, volunteer, apply for a school role such as Student Mentor or Student Rep
- show your personality during interviews
- ensure you tailor your application to each job and don’t send out blanket applications that may not always be relevant to each position
- be consistent throughout the application process and be ready to give examples of skills you have listed in application forms
- start applying early and send out lots of applications
- the more applications you send, the more chance you'll have to practice your interview skills.
