A collection of short stories by second-year Sussex students went on sale yesterday (Tuesday 20 April), following a launch event on campus.
The Anthology of Creative Writing features original stories by 38 Sussex students, who all took the course 'The Art of Short Fiction' in 2009-10.
At an event in Arts B274 to launch the collection, prizes were handed out for the most outstanding contributions. Students Eleanor Whalley (English and History) and Lucia Wilde (Drama Studies and English) took joint first prize for, respectively, A Painting (about an oil painting figure that comes to life) and December is Raining, which explores themes of isolation, madness and love.
Four runners-up prizes were awarded to Cecily Britt (English), Layla Hamon (English and Film Studies), Francis Leeder (Philosophy and English) and Jessica Stott (English).
A prize was also given to Tutku Barbaros, a Drama Studies and English student, whose photograph won a competition to be chosen as the front-cover design of the anthology.
Professor Steph Newell, who runs the course, said: "Each year the School of English publishes this anthology to showcase the considerable talents of our second-year students.
"This year's anthology contains some outstanding contributions on a wide range of themes and issues."
This is the third year that the anthology has been produced. It is available to buy from the School of English office (Arts B133) for £5, and will also be sold on admissions days.
