A new self-service system, making it easier for Library users to borrow, renew and return books, is being launched this week as part of the ongoing refurbishment of the Library.
The previous system, based on barcode technology, has been replaced with a new type of self service using high-specification RFID (radio frequency identification), which is much easier to use, more efficient and significantly faster.
The new system promises to be far more robust and reliable. Librarian Kitty Inglis explains: "For a variety of reasons our previous system didn't allow many of our books to be self issued or returned, which was very frustrating for everyone.
"We believe that RFID will help us achieve as near to 100% self-issue and -return as possible and improve people's experience of using self service."
Other benefits of RFID include the fact that items can be borrowed or returned throughout opening hours. For example, a reserved book or a Core Collection item can be returned at 3am, without the user having to wait until staff start work in the morning.
In addition, an automated sorter for returned books will enable Library staff to get books back on the shelves faster, enhancing access to collections and freeing up time to provide more face-to-face help to users.
