Question Time with Shami Chakrabarti
Thursday 28 January 18:00 until 19:30
Asa Briggs 1 lecture theatre, Arts A
Speaker: Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty
Shami Chakrabarti has served as the Director of the human rights organisation Liberty since September 2003. She joined Liberty as In-House Counsel on the eve of September 11th 2001 and quickly became involved with Liberty's engagement with the ‘War on Terror' and with the defence and promotion of human rights values in Parliament, the Courts and wider society.
Since becoming Liberty's Director Shami Chakrabarti has written, spoken and broadcast very widely on the importance of the post World War 2 human rights framework as an essential component of a democratic society. This has been seen recently in the context of Liberty's opposition to counter terrorism legislation and its campaign to persuade the government not to lengthen the period of time for which terror suspects may be held in detention without charge.
In this ‘Question and Answer' session Shami Chakrabarti will talk about the work of Liberty, the cases and campaigns in which it has been involved and its current efforts to secure civil liberties in Britain today. The event promises to be a lively and informative discussion and all are welcome to attend and contribute to the debate.
