Sussex Economists present collaborative work in New Delhi using TradeSift software on how to support India’s low but rising engagement in Global Value Chains.
On 16 and 17 March 2015, Dr Michael Gasiorek and Dr Max Mendez Parra of CARIS and InterAnalysis presented new work on Indian trade undertaken using Tradesift software at a workshop at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) in New Delhi on “Enhancing India’s Participation in Global Value Chains”. The ICRIER partners reported on a survey of Indian firms which focused on the Automobile, Semiconductor chips/IT and Pharmaceutical sectors.
India is less engaged in Global Value Chains (GVCs) than other major traders, partly due to lack of tools to monitor Indian performance in the formation of GVC along with trade barriers and elements of domestic regulation. But its engagement is rising. This project aims to increase India’s participation in global value chains through i) better understanding of India’s positioning in global production; ii) greater capacity for value chain analysis; and iii) use of evidence to identify regulatory changes necessary to encourage value chain formation.
Workshop participants included Indian officials, researchers and business people, NGO staff and diplomats from the UK-EU Delegation, Australia, Sweden, Japan, Egypt and the UN.
The research, funded by the British High Commission in India will be published as a joint book.
