Professor Nick von Tunzelmann, of SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, received an honorary degree from the University of Tartu, Estonia, at a graduation ceremony on 1 December.

Nick was commended for his "major contribution to the moulding of a new generation of economists", acknowledging his commitment to supervising graduate students from Estonia in SPRU.

His critiques of recent policy trends in Estonia, arguing that policy-makers should focus less on advanced technologies and more on the absorption of high-tech into lower-tech use, are also recognised in the award.

Nick said: "The research of my Estonian students and others shows that there is as much for you to learn from what Finland has done in say its pulp and paper industries as from Nokia."
