This IDS-led, DFID-funded project, with partners in the UK, China and Africa, aims to evaluate changing trade and investment relations between China, the UK, and African partners and the consequences of these changes.
Peter Holmes and Michael Gasiorek (CARIS) and Jim Rollo (Interanalysis) are part of a team led by Jing Gu at IDS which will analyse trade and investment relations between the UK and China on the one hand and South Africa and Kenya on the other, with a view to exploring scope for synergy and cooperation.CUTS (Kenya) and TRALAC South Africa will be local partners. A parallel study of Ethiopia and Nigeria will be undertaken by CAITEC, a think tank close to MOFCOM, with whom close collaboration is anticipated.
An inception meeting will be held in Beijing from April 2-3 to be opened by Secretary of State Justine Greening and the vice Minister of Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) in China. The aim is to produce research to support policy recommendations that the UK and China can implement together.
