As trade unions in Greece today (26 September) begin their first national strike since the country's coalition government came to power in June, Sussex social anthropologist Dr Dimitris Dalakoglou explains in a documentary the social consequences of the financial crisis in Greece and the key events that took place between May 2010 and June 2012.

The documentary was produced and directed by the award-winning film maker  Ross Domoney. It contains videos and photos shot on the streets of Athens and paints a portrait of the widespread economic hardship in Greece.

Dr Dalakoglou was awarded a Future Research Leaders grant by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) for his project ‘The City at the Time of Crisis’.

In October 2012 he will start this urban anthropology project, with a team of researchers, studying the transformations of public spaces in Athens, the social crisis that accompanies the structural adjustments of Greece’s economy and its social implications for the country.

The mentors of Dr Dalakoglou’s project are Professor Jane Cowan and Professor David Harvey.
