Sussex Police are appealing for people to come forward with any information they might have about an assault on a student that took place in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 15 February) on campus.

The police are seeking information from anyone who might have heard male and female voices in the vicinity of Lewes Court car park about 4.30am today, and would particularly like to speak to a woman walking in the vicinity between 4.15am and 5am, who may have seen a man run off.

The attacker is described as male, white, in his 30s, 6 feet tall, with stubbly facial hair, wearing a grey woolie hat hanging off the back of his head, and dark clothing. He was loud and shouting aggressively. [NB This is a slightly amended description, posted on Friday afternoon.]

Anyone who can help is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 and quote serial 152/150212.

Roger Morgan, Head of Security, said: “Campus is normally a very safe place to be. The safety of our students and staff is of the highest priority, which is why we have an extensive range of security measures in place.”

These include a night porter at Stanmer Court and another at York House, 24-hour security patrols, a network of CCTV cameras, emergency phones, and a lone-person ‘walk-home’ service.

Sussex Police advise students always to be vigilant when moving about the campus in the early hours, and when possible to be in company as they do so.
