Sussex students celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday (23 January) with a ‘Ready Steady Wok’ competition in Dine Central, Bramber House.
Twelve Sussex students were eager to demonstrate their cookery skills to the panel of judges: WeiQiang Huang, President of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA); Marcus Williams, Director of Student Recruitment; and Dean Spears, Housing Services Manager.
The overall winner, Chuan Xiang, impressed the judges with a chicken-based stir-fry dish, which he served with egg-fried rice and decorated with courgettes and bean sprouts.
Recipe cards and the ingredients to make Chuan Xiang’s dish will be available soon from the Co-operative supermarket in Bramber House, which donated all the ingredients for the competition.
The contest was the first ‘Come cook with US’ event, one of a series of student events that Catering Services will be hosting throughout the year.
Chinese New Year was also celebrated in style in Eat Central, where Catering Services put on a Chinese buffet.
One happy customer said: ”I love this evening, as Chinese Spring Festival is very important to me. Although I didn’t go back to China to spend happiness time with my family, I still feel warm in the University of Sussex.”
