An evening of newly-devised music theatre, musical installation and composition will today showcase the degree work of four postgraduate students.
Sounds Like... is the degree show of students on the MA in Opera and Music Theatre at Sussex. Tonight's event, in Brighton, includes a piece with no audience or performers, an examination of two voices in performance, a collaborative collage, and a composition using extended vocal technique.
Hearing Me Watching You, by Greg Mickelborough, is "an invitation to participate in a theatrical event where sounds, music, and voices all combine to try and change your perception of the space you are in and of each other. With no audience or performers, all you need do is take a seat, put the headphones on, watch and listen."
As well as working towards his MA, Greg is a pianist and conductor who is musical director of Brighton-based music theatre company S&M productions.
Adele Bates has devised Voice Manifested, a "theatrical examination of two voices in performance". The theatre practitioner and classical singer will use a vocal performance to convey the human nature of the voice, compared to other instruments.
Fellow student Riikka Jokelainen has directed a "collaborative collage" of four performers that started life without a concept, story or situation. Called Presents, the performance is described as and "engaging and meaningful" piece.
Finally, My Brain and Tongue Just Met, by Vicky Tremain, is a composition for voice using extended vocal technique. Vicky is a composer and musician with several Brighton-based groups.
Adele, Riikka and Vicky are also founders of contemporary music-theatre company The Opera Attic.
The MA in Opera and Music Theatre is a new degree, having started in autumn 2007. The showcase takes place at 7pm on Monday 22 June at The Basement (24 Kensington Street, Brighton). Entry is free.
