Sussex's Ultimate Frisbee teams celebrate their victories in the 2012 BUCS national outdoor championships
Four Sussex teams will be battling to retain the title of Ultimate Frisbee national champions in Nottingham this weekend (20 and 21 April).
Both the open (men’s) team, called Mohawks, and the women’s team, called Squaws, head into the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor National Championships as number one seeds and reigning champions.
Sussex’s open (men’s) first team beat Surrey 13-1 in the south-east regional final in March, but the big surprise of the regional contest was a third-place finish for Sussex’s second open team, clinching the third and final qualification spot.
Sussex is the first university in the history of the competition to have two open teams qualify for the national tournament.
A second women's team also qualified and will be competing at the weekend.
Victory would make Mohawks and Squaws national champions for the third year running, cementing Sussex’s position as the best student club in Britain for Ultimate Frisbee.
Lawrence Hill, open team captain, said: “We’ve had an absolutely amazing set of results, which hopefully shows that not only do we still have a very strong first team but we have depth throughout the club which should help us maintain our standings in future years.”
Ultimate Frisbee is one of two ‘focus sports’ at the University this academic year. The ‘focus sport’ project – currently in its pilot year - identifies and supports student clubs that have consistently performed at the highest level within BUCS competitions and national-level events. Specifically, it offers our highest performing teams annual funding for extra coaching sessions, access to facilities, entry to elite tournaments and fitness support.
The other ‘focus sport’ for 2012-13 is fencing.
