Exploring Possibilities: Diverse career journeys at ‘Catalysing Connections’ panel

As part of the Summer of Research 2025, the Catalysing Connections: Diverse Careers Panel, held on 16 June, offered postgraduate and early career researchers a space to reflect, connect, and reimagine what a successful career can look like, within and beyond academia.
The event highlighted the increasingly varied and dynamic routes researchers take throughout their careers. Speakers shared their personal stories that illustrated how career journeys often involve unexpected pivots, challenges, and new opportunities. A common thread was the shift away from traditional, linear paths towards ones shaped by adaptability, and a willingness to step into the unknown.
Several panellists reflected on moving between academia, industry, and the public sector. Some described initial roles in structured and highly organised environments that, while stable, lacked room for creativity or growth. Others spoke about discovering their strengths by working across disciplines or engaging with real-world problems, whether through public health modelling, analytical support for policy, or professional services in higher education.
The session underscored the value of remaining open to change. Many had pursued academic qualifications with the intention of returning to industry, only to find themselves drawn into teaching, research support, or consultancy roles they hadn’t previously considered. Serendipitous opportunities, such as a timely job posting or a nudge from a colleague, often played a key role in career progression.
A central message was the importance of recognising the full range of skills developed through research journey and being proactive about how those skills are applied.

Seek mentors, inside and outside academia, who can offer guidance and perspective.

Look into the career paths of alumni with similar research backgrounds.

Maintain a record of your skills, experiences, and accomplishments to support job applications.

Take action, even small steps can build momentum and lead to new directions.
Above all, the event reinforced the idea that a successful research career does not have a single definition. Whether staying within academia, stepping into policy, moving to the private sector, or supporting research through professional services, meaningful and fulfilling careers are shaped by openness, resilience, and a willingness to explore.
