Liberty Glasses, located in the retail arch space at the Student Centre
Liberty Glasses is a social enterprise eye care company that offers affordable prescription glasses and eye tests for staff and students on campus.
Located in the retail arch space at the Student Centre, Liberty Glasses is part of The Prison Optician Trust (TPOT), which provides prison optometry services and also trains prisoners to develop meaningful careers once they are released.
Tanjit Dosanjh OBE, founder of TPOT and Liberty Glasses, is optometrist manager at the practice. Tanjit said: “We’re aiming to create sustainable employment opportunities for ex-offenders in the optics industry. We decided to open on Falmer campus because we felt it would be a good place to establish our first retail store and raise awareness about how companies such as Liberty Glasses can reduce reoffending.
“In my role, I provide eye tests and dispense spectacles to patients, and I really enjoy training others in new skills. Liberty Glasses has such a positive impact, giving prisoners a chance to rebuild their lives.”
Over the past four years, TPOT has trained over 60 offenders in skills required by the optical customer service industry and helped 45 of its trainees to secure paid employment.
Prices and how to book an appointment
The price for a standard eye test at Liberty Glasses is £25. The price points for glasses are £15, £40, £49, £75, and £150 for designer frames such as Ray-Ban and Prada.
You can book your eye tests at the campus shop on the Liberty Glasses website.
