Born in Bristol in 1961 Ben Highmore studied fine art in the mid-1980s before completing an MA in the Social History of Art at the University of Leeds in 1990. He started teaching cultural studies in various universities from 1991. He completed his doctoral studies at Birkbeck College, University of London in 2000. Betweem 1993 and 2006 he taught cultural studies in Bristol at the University of the West of England. In 2007 he joined the University of Sussex.
