E-submission enhancements 2016

Posted: Tue 4 Oct 2016, 9:02am.

Further developments of the E-submission and E-feedback system were completed over the summer and, for this academic year, the service now includes:

  • support for assessments on all levels, from foundation year to taught postgraduate,
  • an improved interface to make it easier for students to keep track of submissions in Study Direct,
  • support for a wider variety of file types and assessments.

The service was introduced for first year undergraduate courses in September 2014, since when it has been steadily extended to cover more types and levels of assessment. The service is closely integrated into existing systems like Study Direct and custom-designed for staff and students at Sussex.

More details about the latest developments

Available for all levels
In 2016-17, E-submission and E-feedback submission routes will be available for use across modules at all Undergraduate levels, from Foundation year right up to Final year. E-submission will also be available for modules on postgraduate taught courses, where schools have chosen to opt in.

Improvements to the look and feel
The e-submission assessments for a given module will be displayed on a separate page within the module's Study Direct site. From wherever you are in your module, you can navigate to this page from the "E-submissions" link in the Site Contents menu:

Greater flexibility in handling assessments
E-submission via Turnitin
This has been available since 2014-15. Students submit to Study Direct, and their files are sent to Turnitin for similarity checking. All marking takes place in Grademark. This year, the file size will be increased to 40MB to better support the needs of final year students.

E-submission via Study Direct
This new submission route has been introduced to support submissions that are not suitable for marking in Grademark, such as computer programs, zip files etc. Multiple files are permitted. Each file can be up to 60MB in size. Tutors download the files from Study Direct and mark using whatever tools suit the assessment. Marks and feedback are entered into Sussex Direct.

E-submission using Mahara
Mahara is a portfolio system that allows students to bring together various kinds of electronic files or resources and organise them into pages or collections to submit as assessments. It has an in-built journaling feature that supports reflective writing. It is being used with a small number of modules initially.

Simpler rules for assessments in Study Direct
In order to simplify students' experiences, contributory assessments managed in Study Direct must be handled using one of the three E-submission routes described above. The Study Direct Assignment tool is now only available for informal usage (other than for Study Group International).

Sits and resits
For the academic year 2016-17, both sits and resits will be able to use the E-submission types.
