Web server security updates

Posted: Tue 30 Aug 2016, 7:43am.

Over the next few weeks, we will be updating some of the campus web servers that still allow connections using weaker security protocols. This is an important security measure which is being implemented by most companies and institutions around the world and will help to keep our users' data safe.

If you use an up-to-date web browser, you won't notice any difference but if you do encounter problems connecting to secure web pages:

  • check your operating system is updated and supported by the manufacturer (supported systems include Windows 7, 8 and 10 and MacOS 10.10 "Yosemite" or above),
  • check your web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Chrome) is fully up-to-date.

If you have done that and still have problems, please contact the IT Service desk for further assistance.

Technical details
The updates will take place on a rolling basis, updating a series of web servers to prevent connections with SSL2 and SSL3 protocols, which are no longer secure.
